Joana Bruno is a contemporary figurative artist living and working in Nice, France. Her sculptures combine the discipline of classical sculpture with a contemporary approach to form, proportion and geometry.
Her work explores transition, contradiction and coexistence. She is interested in the tension between stillness and movement, vulnerability and strength, and the visible and the hidden. The human figure is central to her practice, often used to examine moments of uncertainty, change and quiet tension.
Joana trained in classical atelier sculpture at the Barcelona Academy of Art, where she studied with the support of a Gulbenkian Foundation Scholarship. She later continued her training at the Athens Sculpture Atelier.
She works across clay, ceramics and bronze, and is involved in the different stages of making a sculpture, from modelling and mould-making to casting and surface finishing. Her current practice focuses particularly on ceramic and bronze, exploring how each material changes the character and presence of the figure.
Her background in scientific illustration also informs her approach to anatomy and observation. Alongside the human figure, she occasionally works with animal forms and references to the natural world. Her sculptures retain the marks of their making, bringing the physical process of working with clay into the finished surface.
